Middlewood Road, Sheffield

Project: 69 Apartments
Location: Middlewood Road, Sheffield
Client: Campbell Homes

Campbell Homes acquired the former Thorn Lea Nursing Home site adjacent Sheffield Wednesday F. C. training ground and the Supertram Park and Ride.

The solution was a development of 69 no. one and two bed apartments in 4 no. blocks. The buildings step up from three storeys at the front of the site to four storeys at the rear of the site, where the apartments have views out across the Upper Don Valley.

A strong street frontage was created with an entrance and notional gateway created between two of the apartment blocks. This creates an urban edge to the site, enclosing a central courtyard and resident’s landscaped garden.

The elevations to the buildings were designed with a contemporary approach, whilst respecting the character of the terraced housing opposite. The scale and massing of each block was broken down with the use of projecting bays, recessed glazing and projecting balconies to living accommodation. The roofs have also been stepped and segmented to give a varied eaves line and roof profile.

The blocks are constructed predominantly in brick with coloured render and timber panels, and sloping metal deck roofs with Eternit panelling beneath. The front southerly corner of the site was retained for a landmark building. The prominent position of the site on a main road into Sheffield required a significant feature on this corner.
