As students all over the UK prepare to head to University for the start of the academic year, some of those heading to Sheffield have something special to look forward to as Self Architects have recently completed a project to develop new facilities at the now fully booked Fenton House.
Fenton House (formerly known as Sheffield One) is a purpose-built student accommodation located in the heart of the city on Wellington Street. In addition to the accommodation, there was a small common room next to the existing laundry area. However, there were also two redundant floors of empty office space and our brief from Prodigy Living was to significantly enhance the communal facilities for residents by providing new amenity spaces and a gymnasium.
The new design opened the space right out, removing all old partitions and created a large social and gaming area for students to congregate and relax.
A large corridor area links through into individual workpods, study rooms, games areas and a versatile kitchenette area for functions and get-togethers on the student calendar. We also included a large multipurpose cinema area which can be used for talks, gaming and films.
As Sheffield is the “capital of climbing” within the UK, it seemed a golden opportunity to include a climbing wall within the Gymnasium area to act as another focal draw for residents within Fenton House.
The specification and use of materials throughout were key to creating a cohesive, dynamic and robust environment, drawing on the industrial influences surrounding the site. Since the completion of the amenity space, Fenton House is full to capacity and Self Architects have been briefed on a number of other sites for 2017.
