Self Architects are pleased to announce the opening of the Terry Wright Building in Gleadless Valley for Sheffield Health Partnership University, as part of the Gleadless and Heeley Centre offering mental health support.
We provided the architectural design for the refurbishment of the existing community hall, and a newly built extension to include on-site accommodation for patients with mental health illnesses to reside if required. The new mental health centre will bring 24/7 support to the local community and carers.
The development also features a modernised Newfield Green Library and Newfield Green Clinic, which has been expanded to provide more rooms for mental health services. A community wellbeing café has also been included in the development.
James Drury, director of strategy at SHPU, said: “This is a major step forward in how we support people with serious mental illness in Sheffield. By working together with our communities, we’re building an innovative place where people can get the help they need.”
On 6 August 2026, Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, visited the new development to make a major announcement about the Government’s plan to redesign how NHS mental health services are delivered in England.
During her visit, she used the Sheffield site as a blueprint for the future of community-focused, integrated healthcare. She announced a major funding expansion to open100 more community-based mental health centres across England modelled after this pilot.
Self Architects are delighted to have completed this project for Sheffield Health Partnership University and look forward to working with them again in the future.
