Arksey Village

Completed: January, 1970

Services: Architecture, Masterplanning

Client: Urbani

Self was appointed by Urbani to prepare a large scale Masterplan of Arksey village near Doncaster.

Design Principles

The proposals were developed in line with the following design principles:

  • New core facilities for village
  • A central village green
  • The existing public footpath connects new core to historic heart of Arksey, All Saint's Church and the Plough Inn public house
  • A new road connection through site to avoid difficult junction in village.

The new buildings have been designed with a contemporary feel which responds to context, creating an attractive environment with a strong local identity. A mix of different tenures is proposed for the village and the development embraces sustainable design. The layout reflects the surrounding urban grain both in terms of massing and footprint, and high quality materials will be used throughout.
