Biomass Boiler, Peak Edge Hotel

Chesterfield

Completed: January, 1970

Service: Architecture

Sector: Industrial

Client: Peak Edge Hotel

Size: 254m²

Self Architects designed this Central Heating Facility to heat the 2,000+ sqm of the new Peak Edge Hotel extension and luxury spa, as well as the existing hotel buildings. The boiler building reflects the local agricultural vernacular of the area and is clad in green insulated cladding to blend into the landscape.

It burns woodchips and aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and bolster the Hotel’s ecological principles and commitment to net-zero carbon reduction by 2050 by providing a 100 percent reduction in reliance on LPG and oil. The building houses two biomass boilers and a backup LPG generator. A delivery bay feeds woodchips into a 90-cubic-metre storage tank providing over a weeks’ worth of fuel. The building also provides a dedicated onsite laundry facility for the hotel and spa.
