Grange Cottage

Berkshire

Completed: January, 1970

Service: Architecture

Sector: Residential

Size: 500m²

The new arts and crafts inspired house is designed by Self Architects to incorporate the vernacular of its rural Berkshire setting, while also providing a luxury 21st century home. The 500m² house sits in the middle of the extensive garden of 5.7 hectares and is shielded on all sides by 3m hedges and trees. To maximise the stunning views of the countryside, the main living spaces and master bedroom are located on the first floor. Three other bedrooms, a study and a pool room are located at ground level and open out to the garden. The new house replaces a highly visible modern style 1970’s house with extensive outbuildings.

The sustainable heating comes from a ground source heat pump and power from the PV panels covering the roof of the 3 car, car port. The design has been developed to facilitate the clients Parkinson diseases, with the pool and a gym for exercise and a lift and wide corridors for accessibility. The project has been submitted for planning.
