Size: 61 apartments
In March 2019, Self was commissioned to develop design proposals for a large ‘Later Living’ development in Derbyshire.
The proposed scheme is for an extra-care housing development for older people consisting of 61 one and two-bedroom apartments with supporting accommodation including a café, residents’ lounges, staff facilities, hobby rooms, guest suites, laundry, assorted stores and WCs, a terrace of 8 two-bedroom dual-access apartments, and associated landscaping works including the provision of 32 car parking spaces.
The building mass is reduced visually by following the levels within the site; this allows elements of the scheme to be more domestic in scale. The appearance of the development has been carefully considered to create a calm and peaceful environment for residents and their visitors. Throughout the development, there will be an emphasis on quality in material selection and standard of finish. A limited material palette used across the site will give a cohesive feel, creating a strong sense of place.
The layout of the main block of apartments is staggered in four parts, this allows for different elevation treatments to be introduced, further breaking down the mass of the building. This section of the development also forms a buffer between the ‘wild’ woodland area and the more formal gardens on the east side.
