The Sycamores Extra Care Housing

South Normanton, Derbyshire

Completed: January, 1970

Service: Architecture

Sector: Residential

Client: Oserian Limited

Size: 61 apartments

The proposed scheme is for an extra-care housing development for older people consisting of 61 one and two-bedroom apartments, of which 8 two-bedroom dual-access apartments form a terrace. The supporting accommodation includes a café, residents’ lounges, staff facilities, hobby rooms, guest suites, laundry and associated landscaping works including the provision of 32 car parking spaces.

Peaceful Environment

The building mass is reduced visually by following the levels within the site; this allows elements of the scheme to be more domestic in scale. The layout of the main block of apartments is staggered in four parts, with different elevation treatments, further breaking down the mass of the building. This section of the development also forms a buffer between the ‘wild’ woodland area and the more formal gardens on the east side. The appearance has been carefully considered to create a calm and peaceful environment for residents and their visitors. A limited material palette used across the site will give a cohesive feel, creating a strong sense of place.
